Suits: What was Mike arrested for?

With the return of the fifth season of Suits getting closer, expectations grow higher on the cliffhanger the show left us with. And despite what creator Aaron Korsh is letting on, the real question may still be "What was Mike arrested for?" rather than "Who tuned him in?".

Will Mike's arrest kill Suits?

The latest episode of Suits ended with Mike being arrested for "conspiracy to commit fraud". While it doesn't precisely specify what he was arrested for, it was presumed it was because of him practicing law while unlicensed. Even though that is the obvious explanation, it would pretty much sentence the show to death (more on that below). [...]

When asked what Mike was arrested for, this was Korsh's response:

He is firm in maintaining that Mike really was arrested for the obvious reason. That is not to say there wouldn't be any other possible reason for his arrest. There is plenty of shady business around him, like the cited deal he made with Harold, but I won't go into detail about that.

Now as for why it would kill the show. Suits is based on one very clear concept: "A guy without a degree working as a lawyer, living under the constant pressure of being caught."

If Mike was arrested for his lack of a licence, there are pretty much three possible outcomes:
  1. Mike is found guilty, and sentenced, thus staying in prison for the remainder of the show.
  2. Harvey finds a way to clear Mike of his charges, and he goes on to some job he is qualified to do.
  3. Harvey, in addition to clearing Mike, is somehow able to legalize him as a "self taught" lawyer, thus resuming his job.
Any of these outcomes (some very unlikely), would result in the show completely deviating from it's original concept. Even the unlikely scenario where Mike is able to continue his work as a lawyer, would kill Suits by removing the burden of illegality from his shoulders.

Is Korsh being honest about the recent events, or is he playing us for a bigger surprise on the next episode? If he is being honest, will it really kill the show's concept, or will he be able to find a way to miraculously keep the pressure on Mike?

Well, regardless of what the arrest was for, let's hope Korsh is able to keep the show on its original course. We will have to wait just a little more to find out!
