Joy: Quirky and fun but unimpressive

David O. Russell's latest creation is quite enjoyable, but lacks the depth of his previous works such as American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook.

From desperation to distinction

Joy is a funny and perhaps overly caricatured and overextended movie, loosely inspired by the life of inventor Joy Mengano. As far as the story goes, everything is hugely exaggerated, to the point where it starts to feel forced. Though that might just be for the sake of its quirkiness. [...]

Mengano is portrayed as "the invincible woman in a world where every single person seems to be against her, but who still pushes through and comes out on top". She is played by Jennifer Lawrence, who is given great opportunity to shine, with the movie focusing very closely on her, and indeed does a stellar job, but that end's up not helping the movie seem any less silly, at all.

O. Russell's previous movies are hard to follow, and indeed they might have proven themselves too hard to follow, as this feels like somewhat of a step backwards in his career.

In the end, this is another one of those entertaining fairytale-like movies, that don't end up saying much, as its caricatured context prevents it from conveying the "strong woman" message it tries to get across. Plus, we do see some great acting.
